ESRT Certification
The student will be required to fully understand the nervous system. Theory training will be provided, with questions, for home study.
This will cover the following:
- The Nervous system
- The parasympathetic nervous system
- The sympathetic nervous system
- The fight or flight response
- The Effects of flight and fight on the body
- How to differentiate between a flight or fight response -
The Therapist will be guided through the following
1. Safety considerations
Understanding the fight or flight response is essential for safely handling and working with horses. The student will learn to identify the horse’s triggers and body language to avoid provoking a flight or fight reaction
2. Building Trust
One of the goals in both therapy and training is to build trust between the horse and the human. This involves creating a sense of safety for the horse so that it feels less inclined to flee or fight. Calm, consistent handling helps the horse learn to trust that the therapist is not a threat, which in turn reduces the likelihood of a fight or flight response
3. Release
The therapist will be guided through a series of movements which will encourage the horse to release deep seated emotion and trauma.
4. Intuition
The therapist will be guided and encouraged to use their intuition throughout the course.
5. Therapeutic Use
Horses that are frequently exposed to stress without proper management can develop chronic flight or fight responses, leading to behavioural issues or health problems. The therapist will be encouraged to develop an understanding of these issues.
6. Record keeping
The therapist will be guided to take notes, paying particular attention to somatic/parasympathetic behaviours and issues. The horse’s natural inclination to either flee or fight can mirror a client’s emotional state, providing valuable feedback in therapeutic settings. The therapist will learn how to identify possible issues that may be adding to the horse’s stress which can then be used as a point of discussion or intervention -
